Dive Site: Coral Garden

Location:  Pulau Kapas, East Coast Malaysia

Dive Season:  April through to October

Date Dived: 26 May 2012

Dive Centre: Aqua Sport, Terengganu

Description of Dive Site:  This dive site is located offshore from Pulau Gemia, which is a short distance south east of Pulau Kapas. The site is a coral reef with a variety of hard and soft coral formations, providing a lot of hiding spaces for you to look for unusual creatures. The maximum depth of this site is only 16 metres and currents are very mild, making it a suitable site for beginner divers. Visibility was fairly good but there had been a storm just prior to my visit, leading to a large amount of particles in the water, obstructing visibility as you got into the deeper water. Water temperature was around 30′C.

Notable aquatic life spotted at Coral Garden includes:

  • Barracuda
  • Anemone fish
  • Jellyfish
  • Black tip reef shark
  • Angel fish
  • Butterfly fish
  • Blue spotted ray

Review of Dive Site:  I enjoyed diving at Kapas and I would definitely return. This is an easy island to reach, at approximately 20 minutes from the mainland by speedboat. The island is small and the beaches are beautiful, so surface intervals here are very enjoyable. This dive site is a good representation of East Coast Malaysia diving, but I wouldn't rate it as outstanding, compared to some other dive sites I have visited in Malaysia.

Review of Dive Centre:  This is the only dive centre located on Kapas Island. It is a fairly small operation near the jetty on a gorgeous white sandy beach. I thought that Aqua Sport were a very professional PADI dive centre. The gear was good and the boat was spacious and fast enough to access the dive sites around the small island easily. The divemasters were very helpful, did very comprehensive briefings prior to going out on the dive, and pointed out any interesting marine life they spotted. They also helped us identify some of those fish we had seen afterwards. When I called up to enquire the staff were very friendly and gave me details on how to get there from Kuala Terengganu, where I was staying. The dive group was small, only 6 divers plus divemasters, which made for a comfortable boat trip and diving environment. I would definitely recommend this dive centre.
